When Manulift welcomed Georges St-Pierre to our 2021 National Sales Meeting, we knew we would hear from one of the most successful athletes in Canadian history.

What we didn’t know was how much it would impact our sales team. No matter what you do, these are lessons that can help you achieve success in your career. Since our meeting in late September, our sales team has been on fire, thanks to the motivation and insight they got from GSP!

The former Welterweight and Middleweight champion discusses his journey to becoming one of the biggest UFC fighters of all time, to the importance of confidence and preparation. Here are the five biggest lessons we learnt from GSP!

1. What it takes to be the best

Georges St-Pierre is one of the best athletes in the history of sports. His dedication to his craft and commitment to improving himself made him one of the most recognizable fighters in the UFC’s history. But to get to that point, he was obsessed with success. During his talk to our salespeople, he discussed how he used to dream about his goals, how he would think about them all day long.

2. GSP’s 5 Rules of Life

GSP explained that he has been greatly inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 5 rules for success, which he has adapted to his own life. The first is to determine what you want to do in life. The second is to surround yourself with people who want to help you achieve your goals. The third is to work hard. The fourth is to invest in yourself and continue to improve. Lastly, the fifth rule is to give back to those you love and the causes you care about.

For our salespeople, this philosophy rang true and has been a defining part of their work and personal lives ever since.

3. Confidence is key

GSP talked about how his confidence always came from his preparation. Everyone experiences doubts, but GSP discussed how he knew he could succeed thanks to the work he had already put in. For our sales team, they always push to be as prepared as possible to give answer any and all of our clients’ needs. By making sure they have the right info, they can help their clients optimize their operations.

4. Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses

GSP challenged our sales rep to honestly assess their strength and weaknesses. By doing this they can see what advantages they can bring to their career. By playing to your strengths, you can be more confident. By working on your weaknesses, you can improve your skillset and push yourself to be the best.

5. How to use your fear

One of GSP’s most resounding insights was how to use fear to fuel your success. “Fear is like fire, it can cook your food, but it can burn you as well,” he said. When it comes to your career, fear can be used to increase your focus. It also ties into his previous point about being prepared and turning that into confidence. Many of our sales representatives took this to heart and have been implementing this in their everyday cold calls, meetings, and sales pitches.

Does this speak to you? Are you a motivated salesperson looking for your next challenge? Do you have what it takes to compete with the best? Then you’re in luck! We’re hiring sales representatives all over Canada. Apply today!
